Texas’ Original & Largest Wakeboard Festival
Austin, TX… The Live Music Capital of the World & some even say it’s the birth place of the sport of Wakeboarding.
Sometime way back around 1985 in Austin, Jimmy Redmon invented a “water ski board” that would eventually become what we know today as a wakeboard.
Of course there is a little controversy with that story because at the exact same time in California, Tony Finn had created the Skurfer.
Although no one is really sure which of these legends of the sport did it first.
One thing is for sure: Austin is the birth place of the state’s first, longest running and largest event of its kind... Waketoberfest is an Austin original since 1998.
Sometime in 1997, event creators Hunter McDonald & Wakeboard World Champion and local Icon, Billy Garcia came up with the idea to start a wakeboard club and
have a grand marquee event at the end of every season. The following year the *360 Wakeboard Club was founded and Waketoberfest was born.
In only its first year the event pulled in nearly 800 people including wake pros Cobe Mikacich and Mike Weddington. Just about every year the event has been graced
by some of the biggest names in the sport. Everyone from Gator, Ricky Gonzales, Wes Brisco, and Keith Lyman to Kyle Murphy and Randall Harris has celebrated at Waketoberfest.
It’s the event where the local lake ripper has a chance to ride against some of the top pros in the sport in true David & Goliath fashion in the Saturday Open Freeride Contest.
Waketoberfest celebrates the end of a great season of riding with friends and has become the big event on everyone’s calendar that is a “DO NOT miss” event every year.
Since its conception on the shores of Emma Long Park in 1998, Hunter, Billy & Stone Slade along with a host of yearly volunteers have continued to grow
the festival every year. 2007 marked the first time the event changed venues. Due to the size the event had become, it had to be moved to
beautiful Pace Bend Park off of highway 71 on Lake Travis. Waketoberfest usually takes place around the 3rd weekend of October but you should always
check www.360wakeboard.com for the most up to date details.
